Harvest 2021 at Torelló

2021, a good harvest

A quick, intense, and aromatic harvest

Puntuaciones Torelló en la Guía Peñín 2022

This year we celebrated the 70th harvest since we produced the first bottle of sparkling wine at Torelló.

The 2021 harvest in our organic estate Can Martí started on August 10th, with the macabeo and pinot noir varieties, followed by the xarel·lo and the rest of the varieties, and ended on September 10th with the parellada and cabernet sauvignon grapes.

It was a very fast harvest, as many varieties ripened at the same time and this forced us to make a special effort at the winery.

2021 was a year characterized by low rainfall and the absence of fungi such as mildew. There was 50% less rainfall than in recent years. Between 1 October 2020 and 31 August 2021, about 300 litres per m² were collected. In spring there was good bud break in all grape varieties and in July we had normal temperatures and mild nights, which helped the phenolic and aromatic compounds to develop well. In August we had five days with temperatures of 38 ⁰C and peaks of 40 ⁰C, which caused a fast ripening of the grapes.

Paco de la Rosa Torelló: «This year the fruit is smaller and less heavy, but firm and in excellent health. We have had less grape production, but with very aromatic potential and good acidity». As every year we have harvested by hand, making a first selection of the grapes at the vineyard, in boxes of 25 kg or small trailers of 2,500 kg and we have transported the grapes quickly to the winery, where we made a second selection of the grapes on the sorting table. As every year, we have also controlled the wild boars with electric shepherds and we have met different mammals that inhabit the estate, such as foxes.

In the words of our winemaker J.A. Montilla: «The climatic characteristics of 2021, the efforts of the viticulture team throughout the year, the grape harvesters during the harvest and the intense winemaking work of the winery staff, have resulted in Corpinnat base wines with a very good balance between acidity and alcohol content, ideal for long-aged sparkling wines and very aromatic and balanced Penedès wines». 2021 will be remembered as a very good vintage!
