Green Pruning

It’s green pruning time at Torelló — undoubtedly one of the most important moments of the year in the vineyard. It is now, in spring, when we determine the yield of the upcoming harvest.
With green pruning, we select the bunches we want to grow, removing the excess shoots and those that we see are not fertile. We limit the production in favour of quality, as by leaving only a few shoots, the plant’s sap and nutrients go directly to those fruits we have chosen, giving them more strength and vigour. The plant’s energy is not wasted on wood or dispersed among other branches.
In addition to deciding how many bunches to leave on each vine, green pruning helps to create optimal conditions for development. We clean the plant by removing leaves and shoots, allowing for better ventilation and more direct sunlight. This prevents the creation of microclimates within the plant and the build-up of humidity. It also helps phytosanitary treatments to be more effective.
As with winter pruning and harvesting, at the Finca Can Martí this entire process is carried out manually. It is a labour-intensive task, but one that undoubtedly contributes to achieving excellent grape quality.
